Max's mother, Amanda, auditions for a new film but worries that she'll only ever be known for her scream queen role in the 1986 horror-slasher film Camp Bloodbath, a cult classic. The two leave the audition and get into a car accident on the way home. Amanda dies while Max survives.

Three years later, Max and her friends Duncan, Gertie, and Chris, alongside Max's former best friend Vickie, attend a double-feature of Camp Bloodbath and its sequel, Camp Bloodbath 2. of her mother's 1986 horror-slasher film Camp Bloodbath. The theater catches fire, and Max cuts a hole in the film screen to help her friends escape. By doing so, she unknowingly transports them into Camp Bloodbath. They pretend they are camp counselors to break a time loop, believing they should play along with the plot and will escape when it's over. They think they're immune to the machete killer Billy Murphy since they aren't part of the film. Things change when Billy stabs Duncan and kills him when Duncan tries to take a selfie with the killer.

The remaining friends decide to stop the rest of the cast from dying since the original survivors begin dying. After the film's original final girl, Paula, dies, they believe Max, the only remaining virgin, is the new final girl. Max also befriends Nancy, the character her mother played in the film. The group lures Billy into a trap that ultimately leads to the deaths of Tina, Vickie, and Gertie. Max rescues a kidnapped Nancy, and they fight Billy together, though he stabs Max. Once cornered, Nancy and Max say their goodbyes as Max tells her the truth about who she is in the real world. Nancy sacrifices herself to Billy with a striptease to make Max the final girl with the power to defeat him. They have a brutal fight though she ultimately gets the machete and decapitates him. Chris arrives moments later, still wounded, and they kiss in front of the Camp Bloodbath credits.

Max wakes up in the hospital surrounded by her friends, who have all survived the events of Camp Bloodbath. Their relief is short-lived when they hear Billy's entrance music and realize they're now in Camp Bloodbath 2: Cruel Summer. Billy breaks through the glass doors to the hospital. Max angrily lunges at Billy.
